About the museum

The roots of the museum go back to the 1950s: in 1956 the city's then art academy organised its first international exhibition and at the same time began to build up a study collection of ceramics. From this grew a municipal exhibition service, which became independent in 1972 and found a home in the building Het Kruithuis; from then on the museum was called Museum Het Kruithuis. In 1985 it received the status of a museum of contemporary art, and from 1988 an internationally oriented jewellery collection was added.

After Het Kruithuis had become too small, plans for a new building failed because of objections, so that from 2003 to 2013 the museum was housed in a former company building near the railway station. In 2013 it moved into the present new building by Hubert-Jan Henket in the Museumkwartier, directly behind the Noordbrabants Museum and connected to it. Until 2018 the museum was called Stedelijk Museum 's-Hertogenbosch.

With the renaming to Design Museum Den Bosch in June 2018, the museum sharpened its profile: it shows design as something that permeates everyday life and has social impact. The collection's main focuses are ceramics, jewellery and the newer collecting area Posthuman. The permanent presentation "Design!" on the ground floor introduces the world of design in 14 themes, complemented by the freely accessible hands-on space OntwerpStation.
