About the museum
The origins of the museum lie in the Provinciaal Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen, founded in North Brabant in 1837, which collected the province's art and antiquities. After stops such as the Boterhal on the Pensmarkt, the collection moved in 1925 into the converted Sint-Jacobskerk on Bethaniestraat, where the Centraal Museum, the predecessor of today's museum, was established. In 1981 the museum became an independent foundation, and from 1983 it occupied the Governor's Palace on Verwersstraat.
The building was originally a Jesuit monastery from 1615 and was converted in 1767 for the military governorate in the Louis XIV style. Since 1984 it has been restored as a museum and extended by two new wings designed by Wim Quist. After a further restoration beginning in 2011, the Museumskwartier was created in 2013 together with the neighbouring Design Museum Den Bosch, with a shared café, shop and glass hall; there is also a garden room and a city garden with contemporary sculptures.
The collection of more than 30,000 objects ranges from prehistory to the present day. The art section includes paintings from followers of Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Brueghel the Younger to Vincent van Gogh, who contributes works from his Brabant period, as well as Jan Sluijters and other 20th-century artists. Flower still lifes, silver and sculptures are also on display. The history department tells the story of the province through archaeological finds, paintings and a city model.
