About the museum
The museum goes back to the P.M. Slager Foundation, established in 1968 by Suze Bergé-Slager and her husband Hein Bergé to make the work of the painting members of the Slager family publicly accessible. The couple had lived since 1959 in a house on the Choorstraat, which gradually filled with family paintings. The Slager family never lived in the museum buildings themselves.
The ground floor of the former insurance building, later a library, was converted after its acquisition in 1975, and the museum opened on 23 April 1976, the 100th birthday of the painter Frans Slager. In 1978 Hein Bergé bought the neighbouring houses, the extension opened in 1987; the last major renovation followed in 2010. Since 2005 the museum has been listed in the Dutch museum register.
The collection comprises paintings, watercolours, pastels, drawings and etchings by eight painters in three generations between 1861 and 1994, from the founder Piet Slager Sr. via his children and daughters-in-law to his grandson Tom Slager. It shows cityscapes of old 's-Hertogenbosch, landscapes, still lifes and portraits, and at the same time gives an impression of the cultural life of the city between 1840 and the end of the 20th century. This is complemented by furniture and objects from family ownership as well as guest exhibitions by other artists.
