About the museum
The Jheronimus Bosch Art Center is a visitor centre on the life and work of the painter Hieronymus Bosch, who was born in 's-Hertogenbosch around 1450 and died there in 1516. It is located in the former Sint-Jacobskerk on the Jeroen Boschplein. The church stood empty for a long time, and the city took the initiative to use it as a place for its most famous son, of whom not a single original painting remains locally. The centre opened on 26 March 2007.
High-quality photographic reproductions of the entire body of paintings and drawings are on display. Because they are not originals, visitors may get very close to the pictures, open and close the triptychs themselves and take photos with flash. The “Flying Objects”, inspired by the strange creatures in Bosch's paintings, float through the rooms. There are also works by modern successors, such as a Boschian Last Supper, a graffiti piece and a triptych by a painter from Limburg.
A particular attraction is the astronomical art clock, opened in 2012, which recreates the Oordeelspel admired in the Middle Ages in the Sint-Janskathedraal and runs every hour on the hour with commentary by volunteers. The building also serves as a stage for concerts, offers a library, educational spaces and conference rooms, and with “Closer to Bosch” gives online access to high-resolution images from Bosch research.
