About the museum
Anders Svor-museet is located by Hornindalsvatnet at Grodås in Hornindal and is dedicated to the sculptor Anders Svor (1864–1929), who came from the district. The museum opened in 1953 in an architect-designed building, which was erected because the deed of gift to the district required a fireproof museum building. The plans were delayed by the war, and the building was inaugurated on 12 July 1953. In the garden outside stands a bust of the artist, and the museum is surrounded by a sculpture park.
Svor grew up in a farming family with long traditions in woodcarving and began early as a woodcarver. He left home in 1882 to study at Den Kongelige Tegneskolen (the Royal Drawing School) in Kristiania and later at the academy of art in Copenhagen. After a period of study in Paris in the mid-1890s he set up his own studio in Kristiania. He became one of the leading Norwegian sculptors of his generation.
The collection consists of nearly 600 objects, from sketches to several of his most central works, including the plaster sculpture “Ung pike” (Young Girl) from 1895 and the bronze fountain “Bylgja” (The Wave) from 1913. The exhibition gives an insight into working methods, subject matter and stylistic development, from detailed naturalism through classicism to symbolism. The museum is today part of Viti.
