About the museum
Brudavollen is an authentic farmstead lying sunny and high on the hillside in Ørsta. The farm was probably resettled towards the end of the 16th century after having lain deserted for a long time. In the 17th century the farmstead was hit by a landslide, and the houses were rebuilt in a new place on the property. The present farmstead was built in the early 19th century, while the oldest parts of the buildings date from the 17th century. Grindløa, the cowshed, is dated to 1622 and is protected.
For a time the farm was among the largest in old Ørsta, and people here, like many others, had to seek new living conditions elsewhere. From Brudavollen came, among others, the first person from Sunnmøre to settle permanently in North America, and the first midwife in old Ørsta municipality. The garden was laid out around 1830 and became an inspiration for gardening in the district.
Ørsta bygdemuseumslag (Ørsta Rural Museum Association) was founded in 1951 and bought the farmstead in 1958. The association owned and ran it until 2004, when it became part of Stiftinga Viti. The farmstead shows an ordinary home in the fisher-farmer society of the 19th century, with a main room (stue), a cottage room (kårstue), a barn (løe), a storehouse (bu), a threshing-wheel house (treskerhjulhus) and a smithy. A modern administration building with a kitchen, internet and a function room for hire belongs to the farmstead.
