About the museum
Jostedalsbreen Nasjonalparksenter is located in Oppstryn in Stryn municipality, by Oppstrynsvatnet on the north side of Europe's largest mainland glacier. The centre was opened in 1993 by the then Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, was authorised as a national park centre by the Norwegian Environment Agency (Miljødirektoratet) in 1997 and re-authorised in 2019. It is owned and run by Stiftinga Jostedalsbreen nasjonalparksenter, with participation from, among others, Stryn municipality, Høgskulen på Vestlandet (Western Norway University of Applied Sciences), Den Norske Turistforening (the Norwegian Trekking Association) and Nordfjord Folkemuseum.
In the exhibition inside, visitors can learn about life near the glacier through the ages and about the first glacier guides and their equipment. In a specially built room, visitors experience an avalanche at close quarters in a film that combines footage from nature with 3D simulation. An interactive model of Jostedalsbreen shows how greenhouse gas emissions affect the development of the glacier, and a biological exhibition presents Norwegian animal species. The exhibitions also show a short version of the film “Fedrelandet” (“The Fatherland”).
Outside there is a fjord and mountain garden with around 200 plants from the local flora, and a geological park with 26 stones from Nordfjord, Sunnfjord and Sogn. In November 2024 the river Fosdøla overflowed its banks and hit the centre, and some of the damage has been preserved as information about climate change and extreme weather.
