About the museum
Atlungstad Brenneri was founded in 1855 by a group of farmers in Stange who wanted to make the best possible use of the surplus from their farms. The distillery lies at Nedre Atlungstad, where the river Fjetreåa meets Lake Mjøsa, a site chosen for its clean water and good transport options.
The main building in red brick burned down in 1864 and was rebuilt by 1866 using the old walls. The extension of 1911 added a potato reception, a 15-metre-high spirit and distillation apparatus, a seed-cleaning plant and a storage room for aquavit. The site also has offices and meeting rooms with preserved interiors, and the houses of the manager and the master distiller.
Today the distillery produces raw spirit, which is the basis for the aquavits and gins of Atlungstad Håndverksdestilleri. The sister company handles the final distillation, storage and bottling.
