About the museum
The Peder Balke Centre lies at the farm Billerud in Østre Toten. The main building was erected while Major General (generalmajor) Michael Darre owned the farm, and took its present form when district judge (sorenskriver) Christopher Weidemann added a complete upper floor and a loft in 1827–28. In winter 1834 he had the painter Peder Balke decorate a large hall on the first floor (annen etasje) with twelve landscape motifs, which were finished in time for Mrs Weidemann's 50th birthday.
Østre Toten municipality bought the farm in 1902 and used it as a poorhouse, later as a nursing and old people's home. The main building was protected in April 1923, primarily because of Balke's wall paintings. The site became an art centre, and in 2026 it celebrated 40 years.
Today the gallery shows the wall paintings, an information centre about Peder Balke, and changing exhibitions of contemporary art in the summer half-year. Sculptures stand in the outdoor area, and the Tepaviljongen Lifland (tea pavilion) from the first half of the 19th century is used for exhibitions. Peder Balke painted the pavilion into two of the paintings. The Gromt café and the shop De 4 årstider (The Four Seasons) are open outside the gallery season.
