About the museum

The history of Domkirkeodden begins with the bishop’s residence at Storhamar. After Swedish soldiers destroyed and abandoned it in 1567, the Storhamarlåven barn was built on top of the remains. Excavations started in 1947, while the barn, stable and threshing floor were still in use. In 1963 it was decided to convert the 18th-century building into a modern museum.

The architect Sverre Fehn designed the conversion so that the remains of both the bishop’s residence and the barn were preserved, and so that excavation can still take place. The project received the Betongtavlen (Concrete Plaque) for 1976. The ruins of Hamar Cathedral (Hamardomen) stand under a protective glass building.

The open-air museum was originally called Oplandenes Folkemuseum. It was founded in 1906, moved to Domkirkeodden in 1912–1914, and today has around 70 buildings. The herb garden was laid out in 1975, inspired by medieval monastery gardens. Domkirkeodden was formerly Hedmarksmuseet and is today part of Anno museum.
