About the museum
Bakken was a cotter’s farm (husmannsplass) under the Dalakergarden farm on Rennesøy. It represents the many husmannsplasser with a stue and a barn under the same roof, of which few remain in Rogaland. The stue part is built of logs, and the barn is built with a stave construction.
The smallholding was small, and there was not much to live on here. It was possible to keep a cow and some sheep, and the farm had a potato field and a small grain field. The potatoes were stored in the earth cellar down in the ground.
Rennesøy has good building stone of a slate-like type, and this shapes the building tradition. The site is now managed by Ryfylkemuseet, and visits take place by arrangement.
