About the museum
Baroniet Rosendal in Kvinnherad was built by Ludvig Rosenkrantz and Karen Mowatt. They received the farm Hatteberg as a wedding gift in 1658, and the small castle was completed in 1665. In 1678 the estate was raised to a barony (lensbaroni) by King Christian V. From 1745 the Rosenkrone family owned the barony, and in 1927 they gave the estate to the University of Oslo. Den Weis Rosenkroneske Stiftelse (the Weis Rosenkrone Foundation) today holds ownership of the castle, the park, the garden, the cotter's farm Treo, Fruehuset and Avlsgården.
The castle is preserved as a home, as the last owners left it in 1927. The Statthalderkammeret (Governor's Chamber) is the only fully preserved room from the 17th century in Norway and is covered with French textile wallpaper from the 1660s. In the Blue Hall (Den Blå Sal) there is, among other things, old Meissen porcelain and Royal Danish blue-pattern porcelain. The Red Hall (Den Røde Sal) shows landscape painting from the National Romantic period, and the Yellow Hall (Den Gule Sal) is furnished in Norwegian Empire style with furniture made around 1820 by Abraham Bøe of Bergen.
Around the castle lies a garden of over 150 mål (an old Norwegian unit of area), with a Renaissance garden and rose garden, a kitchen and herb garden, and a Victorian landscape park from around 1850. The cotter's farm Treo has been restored as it was when the last family lived there in the 1930s.
