About the museum
Folgefonnsenteret in Rosendal opened in 2017 and is the visitor centre for Folgefonna National Park. The centre is a non-profit, self-owning institution, established by the municipalities on the Folgefonna peninsula (Ullensvang, Etne and Kvinnherad) and the University of Bergen. Its purpose is to run a centre for research-based knowledge communication about Folgefonna, the landscape and the fjord systems around the peninsula. It has academic ties to the Havforskingsinstituttet (Institute of Marine Research) and the Bjerknes Centre at UiB.
The exhibition tells the story of the glacier, the fjord, water and how the climate is changing, and it gives a good start to a visit to the national park. Information on hikes, activities and access points around the peninsula is also available here.
In the same building is Skipsbyggjarmuseet Skaalurensamlinga, a small museum about the Skaaluren shipyard, which was in operation from 1855 to 1955, and about the boatbuilding tradition in Kvinnherad. The ticket for Folgefonnsenteret also applies here.
