About the museum
Bautahaugen Samlinger is an open-air museum in the middle of Hedalen in Sør-Aurdal. It lies in a small forest above the valley floor, with the Hedalsfjellene mountains around it. The museum started with three buildings: a Hedal house from the 18th century, a stabbur (storehouse) from the 17th century and a barn with a horse-powered threshing gear (hestegang).
Since then several buildings have been moved there, including a fishing hut from Vassfaret, summer farm buildings (seter) and one of the last årestuer. All the houses come from farms in the local area or are buildings that were used for hunting, fishing and summer farming in the mountains, in Vassfaret and in Vidalen. Together they show life in the valley and how it has changed through time.
The site also includes the smallholding Brakadokka, which ran a general store from 1870. One room in the dwelling house has been fitted out as a schoolroom. The museum has been run by Valdresmusea since 2006, and the residents of Hedalen own it.
