About the museum
Lands Museum was founded in 1927 to document and preserve the history of Nordre and Søndre Land. The museum lies above the town centre of Dokka, at the northern end of Randsfjorden, and looks after, presents and researches the whole history of Land. Since 2004 it has been part of Randsfjordmuseet, together with Hadeland Folkemuseum, Kittilbu Utmarksmuseum and Hadeland Bergverksmuseum.
The heritage farmstead has 36 buildings from Nordre and Søndre Land, showing building traditions and ways of life from large farms to cotter’s farms (husmannsplasser) and forest huts. The oldest building dates from around 1630. One of the highlights is a log house from the Thomle farm from the 18th century, whose walls are decorated with rococo paintings by Peder Aadnes. The site also has an amphitheatre used for concerts, theatre and Constitution Day celebrations on 17 May.
The museum has historical collections, several permanent and changing thematic exhibitions and a varied programme through the year, including a bunad workshop, a museum shop, an archive and a documentation centre. The museum is also working to establish a national centre for the cotter’s farm system (husmannsvesenet). In the summer season the museum is open with a guided tour every day, and outside opening hours the gate to the open-air museum is open so that visitors can walk around the grounds.
