About the museum
The Nordre Øyeren Wetland Visitor Centre lies by the Glomma river in Fetsund, close to the delta area of the Nordre Øyeren nature reserve. The centre is run by MiA – Museene i Akershus and is one of six authorised wetland centres in Norway. It lies next to the historic Fetsund lenser (Fetsund locks), and visitors can use the same ticket for the exhibitions at both places.
Nordre Øyeren is one of Norway's most important wetland areas. In 1985 the area was given Ramsar status, a designation given only to the most important wetlands in the country and in the world. It is also an IBA (Important Bird Area) and part of the Emerald Network. The Ramsar area includes several nature reserves, among them the Nordre Øyeren nature reserve.
Inside the centre there are exhibitions on local fauna and flora, with bird and mammal cabinets, an aquarium with fish from Øyeren and interactive activities. Outside, guests can walk the nature trails in the area and across the raft walkways (flåtegangene) to Blikomøya. The centre also offers nature guiding for kindergartens and schools.
