About the museum
In 1947 the farmer at Søndre Fjerdingby wanted to pull down the old main building on the farm. The municipality considered the site a good rural heritage farmstead and in 1951 bought the main building, the storehouse and some acres of land. A municipally appointed committee began work in 1952, and by 1967 the furnishing had progressed far enough for the rural heritage farmstead to open as “Rælingens Storstue”. In 1973 a permanent guide was employed, and the museum got fixed opening hours.
The main house is a central-chamber building (midtkammerbygning) traditionally dated to 1814, but probably from the late 1820s. The ground floor is furnished as it may have looked in the 19th century, and the collections include many craft tools and a small but complete shoemaker's workshop. In 1991 Rælingen Historielag took over the visitor service and the day-to-day running, and the farmstead is part of the consolidated museum structure in Akershus.
The local history society has also set up two houses through volunteer work: Svingen, a cotter's cottage from Nordbydalen used for handicraft exhibitions, and Landhandleriet, a reconstruction of a simple country store from around 1920–1930. The farmyard also has a storehouse (stabbur), a stable, a garden and Nistua, where coffee and sveler (Norwegian pancakes) are sold at events.
