About the museum
Borgund stave church stands in Lærdal and has stood on the same spot since it was built around 1180. The church is dedicated to the apostle Andrew and is regarded as one of the best-preserved stave churches in the country. The free-standing bell tower is probably from the Middle Ages and is the only one of its kind in Norway.
Fortidsminneforeningen (the Norwegian Society for the Preservation of Ancient Monuments) bought the church in 1877 and saved it from demolition. The visitor centre opposite the church opened in 2005. Here there is an exhibition on the stave churches of Norway and on religious life in the Middle Ages, as well as the exhibition “Unike vikingfunn” (Unique Viking Finds) with objects from the early Viking Age.
The entrance to the church is in the visitor centre. Close by runs the Vindhellavegen, a restored section of the Kongevegen (King's Road) over Filefjell.
