About the museum
Sogn Fjordmuseum lies by the Kaupanger ferry quay on the Sognefjord. The fjord was a source of food, a livelihood and a transport route in Sogn, and in many districts it was simply impossible to get around any other way than by boat. The museum has an outstanding collection of boats from Sogn, from the færing (traditional rowing boat), which was the most common, to the storebåt (large boat), a small Sogn jekt (sailing cargo boat).
The exhibition includes, among other things, a færing, an åttring (traditional boat) and a føringsbåt (traditional boat) side by side. The most imposing boat is the Skåsheimbåten, a storebåt built around 1840 in Sogndal. The museum also has a reconstructed workshop after the boatbuilder Svein Henjesand (1923–2000), the last traditional boatbuilder in Sogn, and traditional fishing gear of all kinds. Outside stands Glaværstova, an old tavern from the island of Søre Glavær in Gulen, which came to the museum in 1930 and is described as the oldest bar in Sogn.
The museum is part of Musea i Sogn og Fjordane and is run together with De Heibergske Samlinger – Sogn Folkemuseum.
