About the museum
Sogn Kunstsenter lies at Lærdalsøyri together with Nasjonalt Villakssenter (National Wild Salmon Centre), Lærdal kulturhus (culture centre), the tourist information office and Laksen bakery and café. The artist Hans Gjesme (1904–1994) from Lærdal gave a comprehensive collection of artworks to the municipality in 1994, and the art centre was built to give the collection of around 3,000 works a home.
The art centre shows works by Gjesme alongside museum exhibitions and contemporary art. Gjesme trained under Pola Gauguin in Kristiania (Oslo), studied in Paris in 1925 and is known for landscape painting and portraits with motifs from Lærdal. The centre is part of Musea i Sogn og Fjordane. Ask at the desk about a joint ticket with Nasjonalt Villakssenter.
