About the museum
The buekorps are a Bergen tradition with roots going back to the 1850s, in which boys and, over time, girls also march, drum and compete in organised corps. The idea of a museum of their own was raised as early as around 1930, but it did not gain support. Only in 1971, after several major corps had been disbanded and much material had been lost, did the work get under way. Representatives of active and disbanded corps met at Gamle Bergen and set up a working committee.
The museum was founded on 25 April 1977 and opened on 26 May 1977 by the mayor, Eilert Eilertsen. It occupies the main floor of Murhvelvingen, the old stone building Muren (the Wall) from 1562 in central Bergen. Over the centuries, Muren has been used as a function hall, dwelling, spirits outlet, offices and museum. Space is very limited, so only a small part of the collection is on display.
The collection includes objects from all the active buekorps and from some disbanded ones, including banners, medals, sabres and drums. The first rooms show an exhibition about Muren, and in the back rooms the active corps take turns showing a changing exhibition. The museum also holds lectures and city walks, and it accepts donations of historical material from current and former buekorps.
