About the museum
Egge museum lies at Egge north of Steinkjer town centre, a place where people have lived for thousands of years and where burial mounds and other traces still shape the landscape. Eggetunet across the fjord was the seat of powerful chieftains in the Viking Age, among them Trond Haka, Olve and Kalv Arnesson. Kalv Arnesson fought on the side of the farmers at the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030, and Sigrid, married first to Olve and later to Kalv, ran the farm for many years.
Today Egge is an open-air museum where old farm buildings such as the storehouse (stabbur), smithy, cowshed, barn and bathhouse (badstue) stand around a farmyard. Here staff in period costume explain what it was like to live on a farm in the 19th century, and animals, including sheep, roam the farm. The county governor's house (Fylkesmannsgården) from 1919 shows a later form of power.
In the museum's buildings the exhibition “TRAKTOR”, regarded as the largest collection of agricultural machinery north of Dovre, is shown, along with “Gamle Steinkjer – Portretter av en by” (Old Steinkjer – Portraits of a Town). The latter recreates a shopping street from the interwar period with a shop for children. The museum also has a new display place, HEIM, in Steinkjer culture centre, for archaeological finds from the area. Egge is part of Museene Arven.
