About the museum
Kunstmuseet NordTrøndelag is housed in Kulturhuset in Namsos and has had this name since 2013. Before that it was called Nord-Trøndelag fylkesgalleri, which opened on 12 March 1988 together with Kulturhuset. The county gallery was the second of its kind in Norway, opened a few months after a corresponding gallery in Sogn og Fjordane.
The collection started with about 200 works belonging to Namsos Kunstforening (Namsos Art Association), and it has grown to around 2,000 works through gifts of art, purchases by Norsk kulturråd and the museum's own acquisitions. The museum also manages the Namsos Kunstforening collection, a collection of paintings by Johs. Rian, which is shown in Riangalleriet, and a private collection.
The museum shows Norwegian contemporary art, usually two to three exhibitions a year with national and regional artists, and also brings out works from the permanent collection. Every year the Trøndelagsutstillingen (Trøndelag Exhibition) is held, which in 2026 will be held for the 50th time. The museum offers art workshops, guided tours and school programmes for children, young people and adults, and is part of Museet Midt.
