About the museum

Levanger Fotomuseum came about when the collection of the photographers Sverre and Christian Bjerkan, 63,000 negatives and many hundred objects, was given to Levanger municipality in 1984. This led to the establishment of Levanger Museum, which later became Levanger Fotomuseum. The museum is today part of Museene Arven (the Arven Museums), together with, among others, Stiklestad Nasjonale Kultursenter (Stiklestad National Cultural Centre) and Nils Aas Kunstverksted.

The collections comprise about 700,000 negatives from professional photographers and amateurs, as well as several thousand objects related to photography. The museum has archives after, among others, Lars Larsen Ingulfsvand from Lierne, Martin Knoph from Steinkjer and Bjarne Wiseth from Verdal, and it specialises in early colour photography. Over 55,000 motifs have been digitised, and about 20,000 can be viewed on DigitaltMuseum.

The permanent exhibition, the Renbjørrommet (Renbjør Room), is about the chemist Harald Renbjør (1889–1956), a pioneer of colour photography. It shows pictures by Harald and his son Per Renbjør, including Skiløperen (The Skier) from the winter of 1907, which is considered Norway's first true colour photograph, together with a reconstructed chemistry laboratory and objects from the business. The museum also offers lectures, courses and advice on photo conservation.
