About the museum
Rasmussen Samlingene, formerly the Rekstensamlingene, is located in the large complex at Fjøsanger and Paradis in Bergen, not far from Gamlehaugen. The building was the art-filled home of the shipowner Hilmar Reksten, designed by William H. O. Dahl and erected in the 1960s and 1970s. The complex was extended with several buildings and opened as a gallery and cultural centre in 1979.
The property was bought by Strømberg Gruppen in 2022, restored and brought back into use under the name Rasmussen Samlingene. The collection now has over 1,800 works, from paintings and sculptures to furniture and textiles, and is regarded as one of Vestlandet's largest private art collections. It includes works by, among others, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Ørnulf Opdahl, Frans Widerberg and Dronning Sonja (Queen Sonja).
The collection also includes a silver collection, Hetlandhallen with satirical and erotic works by Audun Hetland, a room on shipowning history linked to Hilmar Reksten, and one of Northern Europe's largest collections of Persian carpets from the 1400s to the 1600s. The building has a sculpture hall, fine views over the park landscape towards Gamlehaugen and Nordåsvannet, and several function rooms.
The house is also used for concerts, cultural events and as a venue for the Festspillene i Bergen (Bergen International Festival), including for masterclasses.
