About the museum
The Fiskerimuseet lies on Hjertøya, a short boat trip from Molde town centre, and is the fisheries department of Romsdalsmuseet. The museum was established in 1948 and is a collection of old buildings from the Romsdal coast, put together as a small fishing village with, among other things, a train-oil boiling house, rorbuer, a mechanical workshop, an outhouse, a salting shed (saltesjå), a net store (notnaust) and dwelling houses.
The presentation focuses on everyday life and working life during the large seasonal fisheries. Påskhellstua is an unusually large dwelling house from Sandøya, which was moved to Hjertøya in 1977. Before 2020 the municipalities on the coast were called Sandøy, Midsund, Aukra and Fræna, and it was common to combine farming with fishing.
Hjertøya is the largest of the Molde islets and is owned by Molde municipality. The island was a cotter's farm (husmannsplass) under Moldegård until 1903, and people lived there until the 1950s. The artist Kurt Schwitters rented a stone hut on the island from 1930 and created a "MERZ building" inside it. Its interior has since been moved and is shown in its own room in Krona in Molde. The island has forest, beaches and good opportunities for outdoor life and bathing.
