About the museum

Foldalbruket Coastal Museum lies by the sea in Kjøllefjord, with a view over the fjord and passing fishing boats. The museum is housed in a fish-processing plant from the reconstruction period in Finnmark, and the place is described with stockfish and tar, the sound of waves and the cries of gulls. It is a department of Museene for kystkultur og gjenreisning i Finnmark IKS (Museums for Coastal Culture and Reconstruction in Finnmark).

In the permanent exhibition “Kystmuseum” (Coastal Museum) visitors can walk through a typical fish-processing plant from the reconstruction years 1945–1955. During guided tours one hears short stories about fishing gear, local coastal culture, traditions and everyday life in a fishing village, past and present. In addition, the cultural history gallery shows the history of Foldalbruket, Kjøllefjord and the local coastal culture, and places it in the context of Finnmark’s history from the Viking Age to the present.

A summer café is run on the quayside, and various events are held, including the Finnmark Viking Festival in August.
