About the museum
Sjøsamisk Tun is located in Smørfjord on the west side of Porsangerfjorden and was established in 2000. The site is run by Sjøsamisk Tun AS, a limited company with local owners, and its purpose is to convey Sea Sámi culture, history and traditions.
The museum grounds contain automatically protected cultural monuments, including several house foundations from the 1600s to the 1800s. Sámi have lived in Smørfjord since ancient times, and the culture developed from a life of hunting and trapping into specialised reindeer herding and coastal fishing combined with livestock farming.
On the site stands a reconstruction of a Sea Sámi settlement as it may have looked around 1900, including gammer (turf huts), a høykrakke (hay rack), a fjærasjå with a boat and a fiskehjell (fish drying rack). An exhibition shows traditional Sámi costume. There is a café and kiosk on site, and in the summer season culture days and theme meetings are held.
