About the museum
Perspektivet Folkeparken lies at the southern tip of Tromsøya and was formerly Troms Folkemuseum. The first building was erected in 1963 after enthusiasts had campaigned for the cause for about 40 years, inspired by open-air museums to the south, but with the aim of building up something distinctive for the north. Showing coastal culture was important, and the buildings come from Tromsø and the neighbouring municipalities of Balsfjord, Karlsøy and Ibestad.
The site consists of two farmyards (tun). The trading post Kvitnes gathers the houses on the lower side of Kvaløyvegen. The Kvitnesgården from 1826 was originally the main house of the trading post Kvitnes on Vannøya in Northern Troms, and in Stornaustet (the large boathouse) stand two large Nordland boats, fembøringer (five-oared boats). On the upper side of the road lies Mortengården, a large central-passage house (midtgangsstue) from Straumshamna on Kvaløya, representing a coastal farm. The house was originally a two-room house (toroms stue) from the second half of the 1700s and got its present appearance in the middle of the 1800s.
The open-air museum is not fenced in, and you can always walk between the old houses. The museum regularly runs projects to make the site relevant to the present day, often in cooperation with artists and school classes. Folkeparken is part of Perspektivet Museum.
