About the museum
Perspektivet Museum presents stories from Tromsø and other places in the world, using historical objects, traces of the present, photography and art. Its aim is to provide knowledge and reflection on what it means to be human, seen from the north.
The main site at Storgata 95 is a timber house from 1838, built for the merchant family Mack. From 1911 to 2001 the building was Folkets Hus (People’s House). Today the house has exhibitions and offices. Two exhibitions linked to the building’s history, including one on Cora Sandel (Sara Fabricius), are shown on levels 2 and 3 (first and second floors), while photo exhibitions are often shown on level 1 (ground floor).
The museum also has Perspektivet Folkeparken, an area open all year with exhibitions and a small kiosk in summer, and Straumen gård, a coastal farm on Kvaløya that is open to visitors at any time. The museum’s photo archive has around 500,000 historical photographs, which can be viewed on Flickr and Digitalt Museum.
