About the museum

The property was originally called Elvemo and was a cotter's farm (husmannsplass) under the Åfjord rectory. In 1899 it was sold to the Englishman Edwin Martin, a retired wool-fabric designer from Yorkshire, who had the main house built; it was completed in 1905. The old outbuilding consists of building parts from the old Åfjord church from the 1770s.

In 1910 the Englishman John de Grey bought the property. He came to Åfjord in the summer to fish for salmon in the Stordalselva and gave the place the name Fredmoen – "The Place of Peace". In 1919 he inherited the title of 7th Lord Walsingham. After his death in 1929 the property passed to his son Richard de Grey, and later English and Norwegian families came here as holiday guests. During the Second World War, young families from Åfjord lived here, and in the last winter of the war refugees from Finnmark lived in the house.

In 1989 the property was bought by the association Fredmoens Venner, which has restored the site and runs it as a museum. The house has interiors from the early 1900s and objects from the time when the English lord lived here. Lord Walsingham's book about fishing in Åfjord has been translated into Norwegian by the association and is sold on site.
