About the museum
The Hannah Ryggen Centre is an information and exhibition centre in Ørland kultursenter in Brekstad. It is devoted to the visual artist Hannah Ryggen (1894–1970), who lived in Ørland for much of her life, from 1924 to 1957.
Hannah Ryggen was born in Malmö, Sweden, and met the painter Hans Ryggen from Ørland during a study stay in Dresden in 1922. They married two years later and moved to a smallholding in his home district. She chose weaving as her form of expression and established herself as a visual artist in Norway during the 1930s. She sparked debate with her politically engaged art, which had human dignity as a recurring theme.
The cultural centre opened in 2009 and has two galleries named after the artist couple: the Hannah Ryggen Centre and Galleri Hans. The centre has changing exhibitions. In 2026 it is closed due to an upgrade of display cases and lighting.
