About the museum
Uthaugsgården lies in the fishing village of Uthaug on Ørland. The oldest part of the main building was erected around 1740 as the residence of the owner of Austrått. In 1829 Christoffer Jakobsen Lund bought the farm, and his family owned it until it was donated as a museum in 1990. Stiftelsen Uthaugsgården was established as the owner, and the museum is today run by volunteers with support from Ørland municipality.
From 1859 the Lund family ran the farm, trade and fishing from the property. The farm included a trading house, a shipping office and a telephone exchange, and a guesthouse was also run. Lofoten cod was processed into klippfisk (clipfish), herring was salted in barrels, and the goods were sailed along the coast and sold in Europe, where the family also bought salt. The trading business ended in 1972.
The main building has about 40 rooms with furniture, fittings and clothes that belonged to the farm. Outside stand, among other things, a grain store, a food store (matbur) and a three-storey cowshed with equipment and tools. The cowshed houses Galleri Stallen, and around the farm there is a restored garden in neo-Renaissance style with a fountain.
