About the museum
Galleri Espolin in Kabelvåg manages and displays a large art collection after Kaare Espolin Johnson (1907–1994), one of Norway's most distinctive visual artists. The gallery opened in 1992. In the exhibitions, visitors can see several of his main works, pictures made especially for the gallery, and his most important lithographs.
Espolin depicted the coastal landscape and folk life of Northern Norway, and the gallery shows the collection in several halls. The film "Det var alltid en lengsel" shows the artist himself talking about his art, and it is shown continuously throughout the day. It lasts about 30 minutes.
In addition to the permanent collection exhibitions, the gallery shows exhibitions with other artists from time to time. In the summer season there are guided tours of the collection exhibition, and the gallery offers a printmaking workshop. For school classes there are dialogue-based guided tours with artistic activities in the workshop. The gallery is part of SKREI together with Lofotakvariet, Lofotmuseet and Otolitten, and there is a joint ticket.
