About the museum
Lofoten Krigsminnemuseum in Svolvær opened on 15 June 1996. It was built up by William Hakvaag, who for many years collected objects, books and magazines from the Second World War, and it was run as a non-political association for educational work about the war. Since 1 January 2010 the museum has been part of Museum Nord.
The exhibition is regarded as Norway’s largest collection of war memorabilia, uniforms, militaria and other objects from the Second World War, and it has attracted attention beyond the country’s borders. It places particular emphasis on events in Lofoten and Northern Norway, and the museum shows many rare and previously unknown colour photographs from the war.
Many of the soldiers who took part in the fighting in the north in 1940 came from Lofoten, and their opponents were the German Alpine troops. Norway capitulated on 10 June 1940 and was occupied for five years. The Lofoten Raid on 4 March 1941 was one of the first raids of the war, when a British force went ashore and took over 200 German prisoners. The wreck of the factory ship MS Hamburg still lies in the harbour of Svolvær. After the raid, Svolvær and its surroundings were heavily fortified with bunkers and gun positions, and the Gestapo set up its headquarters for Lofoten and Vesterålen in the town.
