About the museum

The old Jæren house at Haugabakka in Kleppe is the local museum for Klepp. The house was built in 1852–53 as a schoolroom and teacher's residence, and was the first schoolhouse in Klepp. In the years 1922–1933 it was used by the municipal administration. The house was restored in 1993 and returned to its original appearance, and the colours were chosen from samples of the oldest paint layers. One of the rooms, which was originally the teacher's residence, is furnished as it may have looked in the late 1800s.

At the museum visitors can study many tools and other objects that were used in the old farming community more than a hundred years ago. Klepp bygdemuseum has roots back to the 1930s, when Peder Heskestad and Karl Særheim began collecting older objects. Some years after the war the objects were gathered in the old schoolhouse at Haugabakka. Klepp municipality took over the museum in 1973, and from 1 January 2006 operational responsibility was transferred to Jærmuseet.

On the museum grounds there is also a folgehus, a so-called Sandneshus built in 1906 and moved from the farm Austre Håland in 1986. It is used for exhibitions, cultural evenings and meetings, and it can be rented from Klepp municipality.
