About the museum

Garborgheimen is the childhood home of the author Arne Garborg, who was born on the farm in 1851. The family lived in the house until 1869, when his father Eivind Garborg took his own life, and by then Arne had already left home at the age of 16. The house is described in several of Garborg's works.

The building is a well-preserved Jæren house. The interior and furniture date from the 1850s; a few objects, including a blue chest, a shelf and a candlestick, belong to the house from Garborg's time, while most of the rest is from the same period. The Riksantikvaren (Directorate for Cultural Heritage) listed the house in 1939, and Time municipality took it over the following year. It was inhabited until 1947, and from 1951, a hundred years after Garborg's birth, it has been a museum.

In 2024 a revised environmental exhibition opened, showing how the loft was used when the Garborg family lived here, and telling the story of the original front door, which was rescued from a container. Garborgheimen is part of the Garborg Trail (Garborgløypa) together with Knudaheio and Time Church, where QR codes give access to films and audio tracks from Garborg's life and books.
