About the museum
The idea of a national Garborg Centre grew out of the 150th anniversary of Arne Garborg’s birth in 2001. Time Mållag took the initiative for a study, and in 2004 the preliminary project “Nasjonalt Garborgsenter på Bryne – for lesing og litteratur” was presented. The project started in October 2006 with Time Mållag, Time kommune and Rogaland fylkeskommune as initiators. From 1 April 2008 Jærmuseet took over responsibility, and on 5 September 2012 the Garborg Centre opened to the public.
The centre is meant to inspire civic engagement, reading and creativity and to be a social meeting place. It is Jærmuseet’s humanistic science centre (vitensenter), where visitors learn by doing. The main target groups are young people and young adults, although it is for everyone. The building is universally designed and is located together with Time bibliotek.
The permanent exhibition “Mot til å meina, styrke til å skapa” (Courage to speak, strength to create) covers the married couple Arne and Hulda Garborg, language, democracy, literature, modernity and tradition, media and outlooks on life and society. Visitors can, among other things, spin the poets’ wheel (Diktarhjulet), play with the magic blue chest, watch shadow theatre and listen to literature in the listening chairs.
