About the museum

Knudaheio is Arne Garborg's summer house at Undheim on Jæren and was completed in 1899. From then on Garborg came here almost every year to write, until he died in 1924. The furnishings and fittings are authentic. Most of the photographs Garborg took in and around the house are displayed inside, together with copies of first editions of many of his books, furniture and other belongings. From the outside the house looks as it did in 1909, when it was clad in vertical boarding (stående panel). The biographical work “Knudaheibrev” (Letters from Knudaheio) from 1904 was written here.

In 1924 the widow Hulda Garborg donated the property to Time municipality. Both Arne and Hulda Garborg are buried in the garden. In connection with the Garborg Year 2001, two memorials were erected at Knudaheio: the stone face “All denne fagre utsyn” (All This Fair View) by Hugo Frank Wathne, and the cairn “Tek kvar og ein sin vesle stein” (Each Takes One Small Stone), made by the children of the district.

For 100 years Knudaheio has been a writer's museum. On 20 June 2025 a new exhibition was opened in the summer house, without compromising the authentic experience. The exhibition presents Knudaheio as a grave site, memorial site, writing place and destination for walks. Knudaheio is run by Jærmuseet together with Garborgheimen and Garborgsenteret.
