About the museum
Haugesenteret lies beautifully by the fjord in the old herredshus (former municipal hall) in Ulvik in Hardanger. The centre is a department of Nynorsk kultursentrum (Nynorsk Cultural Centre) and is dedicated to the poet and fruit farmer Olav H. Hauge and to poetry in many forms, across language boundaries.
The exhibition contains stories linked to poems by Hauge and other world poets. Hauge found his home in books and wrote one of the most extensive diary works in world literature about what he read and about life. Poems from everyday life and nature are central to his authorship, and in the exhibition you also meet Hauge as a reader and on film.
Visitors can try writing poems in the poetry workshop and experience poetry from around the world in the poetry library. For the youngest there is Kattejakta (the Cat Hunt), where children follow cat tracks to Hauge’s cat. The highlight of the cultural programme is the Poesifestivalen (Poetry Festival), held in September every other year.
