Medieval hall from 1295 at the Finne farm in Voss, probably the only secular building in Norway built in stave construction, open in summer.

About the museum

Finnesloftet at the Finne farm in Voss is a hall from the same period as the stave churches. The building was probably erected in the summer of 1295 by prominent men at Finne, and dendrochronological studies show that the timber was felled in the winter of 1294/1295. The construction is entirely unique: on the ground floor there are two log-built timber storerooms (bur), and on the first floor there is a stave construction with upright timbers, as in the stave churches. It is the only secular building in Norway built with stave technique.

The hall on the first floor was a meeting place, banquet hall and reception room for the families who controlled the property company Finnesgodset at Voss in the Middle Ages. Here business contacts could be received for negotiations about new properties, and guests could be entertained at table. The loft was probably also rented out to others besides the Finne family.

The Fortidsminneforeningen (Norwegian heritage society) has owned Finnesloftet since 1891, and it is run by Voss Vandrarheim (Voss hostel). Concerts are held in the loft in summer, and guided tours can be booked for groups.
