About the museum
The artist Bernhard Greve (1886–1962) bought Skredhaugen at Lofthus in 1918. He was a versatile artist who had studied painting under Harriet Backer and Henri Matisse, among others, but became best known as a stained-glass artist. Together with his wife Ingrid he moved several old houses from various farms in Sørfjorden to the farmstead over the following years and filled them with old furnishings, tools and everyday objects he had collected in the district. In this way he created a lively art and cultural history museum, which was also the family's summer home.
Today the farmstead consists of picturesque old houses with farmhouse interiors gathered from the Lofthus district and the hamlets around Sørfjorden, including Seksestova from the 1600s. There visitors can see the private collection of Bernhard and Ingrid Greve. The farmstead also shows the art collection of Jon Bleie (1904–1981), who left a lasting mark on cultural life in Hardanger. Bleie built up a large private collection of Norwegian art and art literature and bequeathed it to Ullensvang herad (Ullensvang municipality). Here guests can get to know artists such as Henrik Sørensen, Harald Kihle and Theodor Kittelsen.
Skredhaugen is today part of Hardanger og Voss museum and has new exhibitions every summer.
