About the museum
Herøy kystmuseum is on a small island in Herøy municipality in Sunnmøre. The place has played a central role in the region for more than 1,000 years and was already an important meeting place in the Viking Age. From the Middle Ages it was a church site with a guild hall (gildestove) and parsonage, and later a trading post from 1770 to 1916. The merchant Sivert Olsen lived here and became one of the wealthiest men in Sunnmøre.
The museum shows the old trading post from the 1700s and 1800s with authentic buildings, interiors from different periods, fishing gear and boats. A reconstruction of the Sunnmøre sailing boat (sunnmørsjekt) "Anna Olava" has its home port at the museum. The island also contains the old church site, a pilgrimage destination, hiking and nature areas, and Herøy amfi (amphitheatre), where the St Olaf play "Kongens Ring" (The King's Ring) is shown on the first weekend in July.
Admission includes a guided tour of the museum and the old church site every full hour. On the farmyard in front of the main house, waffles, coffee and ice cream are served from the museum café, and in the krambua (general store) gifts, books and handicrafts are sold. The tourist information office for Herøy is also located here at Herøy gard (farm).
