About the museum
Runde Environmental Centre lies on the island of Runde in Herøy municipality, by the southernmost bird cliff in Norway. The centre opened on 1 October 2009 and consists of a research station, run by Runde Forsking, and a visitor centre, run by Opplev Runde. During opening hours the visitor centre also provides tourist information for Herøy municipality.
Around 230 bird species have been recorded on Runde, and puffins breed here in the tens of thousands. The bird exhibition in the visitor centre tells the story of seabirds and why so many of them have disappeared in recent decades. The guided tour of the exhibition begins with the film “Havets Sølv”.
The centre also presents the Rundeskatten (Runde Treasure). The Dutch merchant ship Akerendam was wrecked off Runde in 1725 with gold and silver coins on board. The treasure was found by divers in 1972, and parts of it are on display together with objects from the wreck and a model of the ship. The centre also offers boat trips, kayak trips, puffin safaris and guided walks in the mountains and on the shore.
