About the museum
Jøssingfjord Vitenmuseum lies at the innermost end of Jøssingfjord in Sokndal municipality, on the historic industrial area of the mining company Titania. The museum is run by Dalane folkemuseum and is the only science museum in the country that looks at the connection between geology and mining.
The starting point is Dalane's unique geology: the bare mountains between Egersund and Flekkefjord consist of the rare rock type anorthosite, which has influenced both settlement and business for several hundred years. The exhibitions show how nature, people and technology are connected, and they are intended in particular to spark the interest of children and young people in science subjects (realfag) through interactive games and activities.
The Nedre Helleren power station from 1908 is part of the museum and shows that industry was established early in the fjord. The museum also highlights the fascinating wartime history of Jøssingfjord and the Altmark incident. Café Dråben has a view over the fjord and the buildings below Helleren.
