About the museum
Kaupang lies by Viksfjorden near Larvik and is the site of one of Norway’s earliest urban trading places, founded around the year 800. More than 1,200 years ago people gathered here to trade, practise crafts and exchange knowledge, and the location by the fjord made the place important for trade and traffic in the Viking Age.
Today visitors can see a reconstruction of a Viking Age house and a model showing how parts of the settlement were arranged. Archaeologists have investigated Kaupang since the 19th century, and much of the original settlement has still not been excavated. The exhibitions explain what has been found, how the excavations were carried out and what the finds say about trade, crafts and power in the Viking Age.
Guides from the Kaupang project lead tours indoors and outdoors and tell about the people who lived here and about the burial fields. In the summer season there are activities for children and adults, for example archery, archaeological digging, storytelling and guided walks in Nordre Kaupang. The Kulturminnestien Fasanatur (Fasanatur heritage trail) starts at the car park and is free of charge.
