About the museum
Kokelv sjøsamiske museum was established in 1991 by Kokelv museumslag (Kokelv Museum Society) and Kvalsund municipality. Today it is a branch of RiddoDuottarMuseat. The main site is Nillagården, a genuine Sea Sámi smallholding built during the reconstruction period after the Second World War, with a dwelling house, a cowshed and an outbuilding. The farm has a view towards the beach.
By the sea stands a new, large boathouse and a third of an old boathouse, and this is where the boat collection is kept. The museum shows Sea Sámi culture in its natural surroundings, with living conditions and a way of life based on smallholding and fishing.
Among what is displayed is a reconstructed Kokelv costume. It is based on a Sea Sámi costume that was worn in Kokelv in the 19th century. The original was rediscovered in Norsk Folkemuseum in Oslo more than a hundred years later, and today the costume is again used locally as festive dress. The museum has normal opening hours in summer, and outside the season visits can be arranged with the museum leader.
