About the museum

Stabbursnes Naturhus og Museum (nature centre and museum) opened in 1990 as an information centre for nature and culture in Finnmark. In 1997 it was authorised as a visitor centre for Stabbursdalen nasjonalpark. The centre lies by the E6 at Stabbursnes in Porsanger, near the Stabburselva river, the Porsangerfjord and Stabbursdalen.

The permanent exhibition shows Finnmark's different natural areas, from the inland plateau to the outer coast, with traditional resource use and cultures in each region. The exhibition has five sections: Vidda (the inland plateau), Elvedalene (river valleys), Fjordene (the fjords), Kysten (the coast) and Naturvern (nature conservation). Vidda covers reindeer and Sámi reindeer herding and the mire areas with breeding wetland birds. Elvedalene covers the salmon rivers, forestry, the plant and animal life of the forest and the history of farming.

Fjordene shows Finnmark's geological history, Stone Age settlement and fjord and coastal Sámi culture. Kysten covers the ecology of the Barents Sea, aquaculture and seabirds, and has a traditional fishing hut (sjøbu) that shows coastal culture. The conservation section presents the county's five national parks and the protected areas in Porsanger. Visitors can also watch films, and the centre sells, among other things, field guides, maps and fishing permits.
