About the museum
Porsanger museum was established by Porsanger municipality in 1998. It was based on collections that Porsanger historie- og museumslag (the Porsanger history and museum society) had begun to gather as early as the 1960s. Today the museum is a department of RiddoDuottarMuseat, which brings together four Sámi museums and a Sámi art journal in Western Finnmark.
Porsanger is an area where three cultures meet, and the museum tells of Sámi, Kven and Norwegian cultural history and of how people have used the resources of the area. War history is also an important part of the collection. The exhibition on the Second World War was renewed in 2016, and the museum also tells the story of Johan Kaaven.
The museum is housed in Porsanger town hall in Lakselv, with the entrance through the library. A new main exhibition is under development and is planned to be completed in 2027. In summer the museum also shows an exhibition on rock carvings (helleristninger) at Indre Sandvik.
