About the museum
The Konfeksjonsmuseet in Isfjorden shows the history of the Norwegian clothing industry and places Romsdal in this context. Isfjorden is called “konfeksjonens vugge” (the cradle of the clothing industry): as early as the 1860s, ready-made clothing was produced here, which was quite unusual at the time. The market was found among the fishermen along the coast to the north, and the so-called Nordland trade laid the foundation for the rapid development of the clothing industry in Romsdal. Around 1950, about 55 per cent of the working population in Isfjorden were employed in the clothing industry, and Romsdal became known as “Norges kleskammer” (Norway's clothing chamber).
The museum is housed in Oddfred Tokle's clothing factory, which operated from 1938 to 1982. The building is preserved as an authentic residential and working environment from the 1960s: cutting took place in the basement, sewing on the ground floor, the factory owner's family lived on the first floor, and the workers' rooms were in the attic. The restored house now has new exhibitions.
The museum is the result of cooperation between Norsk kulturråd, Riksantikvaren, Møre og Romsdal fylkeskommune, Rauma kommune and local initiative, and it is run by Romsdalsmuseet.
